SLIDE Acoustic extensively models the sound of an acoustic steel string guitar played with a slide, commonly heard in blues and country/folk music. Rather than including pre-recorded slide articulations, which would limit the intervals and speeds of sliding, we've developed an ultra-realistic slide engine that models all the nuances related to slide articulations. This includes everything from keeping the slides timbre-correct as well as the noise of the actual slide moving on the strings. This also applies to vibrato as well, using a custom LFO in addition to the slide engine for realistic vibrato. We sampled the acoustic guitar with an open D tuning, a common tuning used for playing slide guitar, which has a deeper, richer tone than standard guitar tuning.

The sound of FM synthesis pretty much dominated the first half of the 80s. Yamaha had been the top of the tree for some years in the '70s with their analogue polysynths such as the CS80 but that market was snatched away from them by the Prophet 5 and later, the Oberheims. As fabulous as the CS80 was, it was a big and heavy bugger and had to be treated with kid gloves on the road otherwise all the sensitive little trimmer pots could be knocked out of whack leaving the thing horribly out of tune. It was also extremely expenive. The Prophets and Oberheims were light and portable by comparison and a lot cheaper (if you consider £3,000 'cheap'!). Not only that, they were totally programmable unlike the CS80's somewhat kludgy programmable four patch memories.

The ShelTone 226 is a cool electric reed organ built into a tolex suitcase. It makes its sounds by using an electric fan to drive air over reeds, much in the style of a harmonium or accordion. As well as three octaves of keys, the original 226 boasts a set of Bass Note buttons to the left of the keyboard, plus two sets of Chord buttons – one major set, one minor set. You don’t get all the bass notes and chords of a full octave, though, just a selection, which limits playing on the original keyboard to certain keys (basically C, D, G, A and F).
