A warm, mellow analogue drum machine

Super-mellow analogue drum machine
Thick, warm sounds with individual kit piece control
Built-in syncable preset rhythms to take you back in time
Perfect for chillout, lounge, downtempo styles

Another car-boot-sale score by Mongo, the Concert RF-FIVE is a little wood-veneered preset rhythm unit featuring five onboard rhythms (hence its name) and a lovely warm, mellow sound. We particularly like the kick, which is thick and almost woolly played “raw” but which comes to life in a really interesting way if you dial in some saturation and compression: you can hear this in the second audio demo, where we've cranked the controls a bit to give the sound some extra heft. The snare is very laid-back and the hats tick away very nicely… plus there's a neat little woodblock / click sound hidden away in there too.

All five preset rhythms sync straight to your DAW tempo and are combinable, so you can splice together weird and wonderful mashups of the originals, or just use them as fills and layer patterns over your own beats (which is what we did at the end of Demo 2, in fact). The individual kit pieces are split out as usual so you can use them to craft slightly more modern grooves than “foxtrot”; plus of course there's level and pan control for them, and Velocity Retrofit so that more humanised patterns sound authentic. It's a very simple little box, just like the original!

Concert RF5 blends very nicely into a mix, sitting back and gently steering the groove without pushing itself forward. It's ideal for chillout styles or tracks where you want to showcase the vocalist without the beat competing; and we've found it goes particularly well with acoustic guitar. If you want to kick back and get a mellow tone going, this could be your friend ????

(All our Kontakt instruments require a full copy of Native Instruments Kontakt v4.2.3 or higher (including all versions of Kontakt 5). Kontakt Player is not supported.

P2P | 26 December 2018 | 6.86 MB Regal Rhythm is a very simple drum box with a typical vintage analogue sound. The six on-board preset rhythms cover the kind of staples you'd expect from more of a home-orientated (rather than studio grade) piece of kit, and there's a slightly fuzzy, soft-edged tone to the whole thing that can work very nicely for chillout, downtempo tracks. It also comes in a...

Team VON.G | 24 March 2015 | 3.62 MB 8-bit is the new cool! Weirdly, that seems to be as true today as it was back in 1984 when Korg launched their first digital drum machine, the SuperDrums DDM-110. Complete with 8-bit PCM samples, accent control, a sophisticated yet easy-to-use programming interface, and a DIN sync socket (no MIDI yet…), it was in many ways ahead of its time. The sound is far...

DISCOVER | 24 MARCH 2015 | 13 MB One thing ought to be made clear straight away: the charmingly-named EKO New Rhythm Box may be a rhythm box, but it was only “new” about fifty years ago. In essence it’s a little veneered wooden slab packed with ten preset analogue rhythms, much in the fashion of early Korg, Wurlitzer or Hammond rhythm machines. While WurliBeat still holds the title for best...

DISCOVER | 24 MARCH 2015 | 17 MB Rytm16 is sampled from the Unitra Eltra Rytm 16 preset drum machine – a transistor-based analogue soundbox haling from Poland in the late 70s. The original Rytm 16 is an endearing little box of tricks, comprising 16 preset rhythms each of which plays out over two bars, with slight variation in the second bar. The presets themselves are rather fun: not only the...
