At SonicFaction our goal is to sample and create VI’s that sound as good (or better) than the real thing as well as being super-easy and fun to play with. We applied that philosophy to bring you our first Ableton instrument, The SonicFaction EvilFish 303. As it turns out, this is THE BEST re-creation of the infamous Devil Fish 303 that is available.
Here’s why: We painstakingly recorded the Devil Fish 303 note by note through high-end analog gear to capture the warmth and detail of the original instrument. Because we used the best tools available in the recording process the sound quality of our instruments is unmatched - and you can really hear the difference!
About ten years ago we sent our Roland TB-303 to Australia where a man named Robin Whittle modified it into the Devil Fish. What makes the Devil Fish modification so special is that it adds a ton of features which enhance the 303, literally turning an already classic instrument into a hot-rod analog beast. Mr. Whittle added knobs, switches, and buttons like “Overdrive”, “FM Filter”, “Filter Tracking” , as well as 4 additional banks of ROM memory to store extra patterns in.
The most significant improvement that the Devil Fish brings to the 303 is the “Overdrive” knob. Mixed with the legendary 303 Analog Filters the “Overdive” gives you radical distortion and and rich harmonics that were previously unobtainable with the original 303. The “FM Filter” adds a different dimension of tonal filtering, while the “Filter Tracking” knob can cause 303 patterns to jump to life. In the spirit of the Devil Fish mod, we sampled the Overdrive at 4 different levels and we threw in new Ableton Distortion Wave Shaping as an additional sound sculpting tool. The meticulous recording and clever programming make the EvilFIsh 303 a truly massive instrument.
