Gqom is a South African dance music genre that originated in the Durban townships in the early 2010s. "Gqom" is an onomatopoeia from the Zulu language and is meant to represent the sound of a drum pronounced with an alveolar click followed by a guttural "om". This style is a heavier take on Afro House with a dark undercurrent, characterized by repetitive bridges and a slow-burning beat that builds to a climax. Using only a few elements like a single and menacing synth pattern or chopped-up sample, Gqom employs a similar “broken” beat as UK Garage, but with a more intricate system of polyrhythms floating in and out and interacting with each other. Hailing from Durban and now living in Johannesburg, producer Hugo Tenza shares the dark, menacing sounds of Gqom.
