Creative Pentatonic Applications for Jazz Guitar
Jazz guitarists spend many fruitless hours searching for new exotic scales and modes to enrich their solos and improvisations. More often than not, the sounds they seek can be found within the scales they already know. For example, the basic 5-note pentatonic scale will yield a treasure trove of fresh sounds and creativity.
Ted Ludwig's 'Framework' edition of his Pentatonic Prism series reveals a robust framework and methodology for quickly modifying pentatonic scales to create the more complex, sophisticated, and 'outside' sounds we seek.
”As jazz guitarists, we explore diverse scales and modes to help bring a new dimension to our solos and improvisations. Yet sometimes, the key to that fresh perspective might be nestled within the scales we already know.
We'll examine the five main chord qualities in Jazz: Minor 7 Chords, Major 7 Chords, Dominant 7, Suspended, and Altered Chords. For each, I'll demonstrate pentatonic tactics that impart their unique magic over the harmony, and then I'll mix and match them in an improvised solo over backing tracks.“
