Many musicians often experience a sense of surprise and even horror when they hear themselves on a recording, primarily due to their timing. ("Am I really rushing that badly?") Learning to play with good time is critical to so many aspects of being a musician. Firstly, if you're a "rushin' draggin'" musician, it can be challenging to secure regular gigs. But even if you work alone and record music by yourself, you'll save a lot of time and editing headaches if you're able to record a solid track to begin with. In this musical lesson video course, Larry Holcombe breaks down the subject in a clear, focused way that's sure to improve your rhythmic feel by leaps and bounds! By the end of this musical video course, you'll be well on your way to playing in the pocket and grooving hard.

Larry begins by discussing some of the terminology (syncopation, swing, groove, etc.) used throughout the course so that everyone will be on the same page. Then you'll start by working on the main pulse, where you'll learn to count and play quarter, eighth, and 16th notes in various combinations while playing to a metronome. Larry also thoroughly covers beat division, which will lay the groundwork for our basic rhythmic theory.

Next, you'll explore the idea of accents - from simple to more complex - and see how they can affect the groove in various ways and help even the most pedestrian rhythms come alive. This is followed by a look at triplets and how they fit into the rhythmic vocabulary. As they form the basis for swing rhythms (both eighth- and 16th-note varieties), a solid triplet feel is absolutely essential. Other topics include note length (becoming aware of its importance in the groove) and the Randomized Groove Generator included in this course (generating random rhythmic phrase combinations for practicing or creative applications).

Poor timing is an issue that plagues many musicians as they begin their journey of playing with others or recording, but it doesn't have to be. With this musical video course, you'll see how a carefully structured method can do wonders for your timing, greatly reducing the amount of time needed to become a true "pocket player," not to mention opening up other possibilities and expanding your rhythmic pallet. Check out the individual video tutorial descriptions for more information on all that's covered and how it will transform your playing for the better. Learn what people mean when they say it's all about feel... Watch "Developing Your Inner Timing and Pulse Explained®" now!
