DMV-born, LA-based producer Warpstr is a stellar force, drawing a direct line between trendsetting rap production and a raw, somatic feel for dance music. His analog-heavy take on trap has become a go-to for Babyxsosa and Yung Kayo and earned him credits with Yeat and Lancey Foux, but Soundcloud veterans could not forget his formative Jersey- and Baltimore-inspired club uploads. His most recent release, ‘GROUNDBREAKER,’ with umru, is a reminder of his lifelong dance sensibilities.
‘Warptone’ is a glossy, neon toolkit for both the next beat pack or the next club set, ranging from tearjerker trance melodies to immediately usable 808s and drums. Built from years of sounds in the vault and novel experiments with analog gear in Splice’s Sound Factory, Warpstr’s collection develops an essential, evocative sound palette from basic sources, immediately inviting you to flip, warp, and build into your own.
Warpstr leaves us with the following instructions— “I made these sounds in my sonic language with the idea of using each in more than one way. Use these sounds instinctually and avoid logic.”
