Hollow Sun The Shell KONTAKT

The Shell is a unique thing in that it’s an empty Kontakt instrument which allows YOU to put YOUR samples into it and have a fully functional, professionally scripted and designed panel at your disposal for sonic tweakage. Ideal if you make your own samples/sounds but aren’t able to do scripting or find it difficult.

Scripting IS very complicated if you’re not that way inclined … like myself … which is why we have our own resident scriptmeister in the form of the enviably gifted Mario Krušelj here at HS Towers. Let's face it, Kontakt scripting can be very complicated even if you ARE that way inclined!

You've just moved into an old house, you've settled in, got your stuff unpacked and you decide to have a rummage around the attic to clear out some of the junk left behind by the previous occupants. In the process of doing this, you stumble across a curious looking box of electronics. Intrigued, you dust it off, observe the slight stains of verdigree on the chipped hardboard fascia, you smile at the badly applied Dymo tape labelling and take it downstairs for closer examination. It all looks very promising - obviously very badly made by someone with few construction skills and who ran out of matching knob caps but it seems to be some kind of home-made synthesiser.

We were having some fun fooling around on the Dotcom recently and came up with some rather nice analogue string patches. But being monophonic, we lobbed them into Kontakt to see how they sounded as chords ... and they sounded rather nice. So we did some more and they stacked up rather well. Some went via the Q127 Fixed Filter Bank, others via the Suit&Tie Guy VCS3 filter and others via the Q150 Transistor Ladder (Moog) filter.

With an ADSR envelope, 3-band EQ, echo and convolution reverb featuring a wide range of impulses, it's is child's play to create ethereal washes of sound suitable for many genres. It's also possible to set the controls to give a rougher, rawer sound more akin to a Mellotron. Because of the nature of the way they were recorded (onto tape let's remember) and bounced back and forth between machines a few times then looped (with a splicing block and razor blade) and bounced back again, the samples have a very 'earthy' and 'organic' quality often not found in other breathy vocal samples.
